Members of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) have been advised to venture into politics if truly they desired an improved state of things in the Nigerian nation.

This advice was given by a foremost Accountant and former President of the institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi at the investiture ceremony of 6th Chairman and inauguration of new executive 2020/2021 of Ijebu Ode District Society held recently in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Otunba Owoyemi said it was not enough to sit down, watch the situation or make suggestions as to how the governments should be run but take a proactive steps towards changing the situation for the better by participating in governance.

This elderly man seasoned with Accounting urged them to go into politics, participate actively by seeking elective positions which would enable them to bring about the change Nigerians collectively craved for.

He declared at the event that watching from the outside and criticising the system of administration would only amount to fruitless exercise which might not help in the redemption of the nation in a trying period like the county is currently experiencing. “If anyone had any idea or recipe for better governance, such a person could only bring it when involved in the running of the government”, he stressed.

The former President who held sway in the Accounting profession years back said the institute comprised thoroughbred Accountants and administrators who, in the course of their practice have exhibited exemplary and dexterous leadership quality he was optimistic if brought into the administration of the country, things would start looking up.

Otunba Owoyemi however warned them not to take up the role of Auditor, because according to him, it might lead them to unceremonious and unpalatable ouster or injurious to their wellbeing as a result of the infamous attitude of some politicians.

Earlier in her address the President of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mrs. Comfort Oluwajumoke Eyitayo poured economiums on members of the institute for the noble way they have been carrying out their responsibilities, charging to avoid any act capable of defaming the body.

Eyitayo who is the 57th President of the ICAN expressed confidence in the leadership of the Chairman, Mrs. Morenike Taiwo and Executive members of Ijebu Ode District and enjoined them to remain above board.

In her acceptance speech the new Chairman of the District Society, Mrs. Morenike Taiwo expressed gratitude to members of the District for the confidence reposed in her to lead the District, promising she and her executive team would not let them down.

She expressed appreciation to past leaders of the district for their contributions to its growth and development right from inception, about 12 years ago, saying that herself and her team were aware of the obligations of their positions, and that they would devote themselves unwaveringly to the attainment of the objectives; to promote and protect what she described as enviable image of the District Society in particular and the ICAN in general.

Mrs. Taiwo promised that during her administration they would ensure, amongst others: District Secretariat construction, having secured two plots of land donated by one of their patrons, Alhaji Rasheed Adenusi; improve membership attendance; members development initiatives through seminars, trainings and conferences; create database for members; work towards having the district’s chapter of Society for Women Accountants in Nigeria (SWAN).

The ceremony graced by top echelon of the Accounting profession, Academia, traditional rulers was rounded with school debate and Quiz Competition won by Sacred Heart College, Ijebu Ode with Federal Government College, Dagamu placing 2nd and Vanguard Academy, Ijebu Ode clinching 3rd position.

Other areas are: embark on ‘Catch them Young’ (CTY) mobilise and encourage students programme through aggressive enlightenment and awareness programmes for secondary schools; hosting of the Western Zonal Accountants Conference in 2022.

The other members of the Executive of the district for 2021/2022 are: Mr. Olusegun Adewale, Vice Chairman; Mr. Kayode Akanji, General Secretary; Miss Yewande Adetan, Financial Secretary; Mr. Rotimi Fapounda, Treasurer; Mr. Ibrahim Tajudeen, Asst. Gen. Secretary; Mr. Yusuf Idowu, Ex- Officio; Mr. Dare Oreyemi, Ex-Officio and Mr. Stephen Gbogiaran, Past Chairman.
