Traditional Rulers in Ijebu have pledged their support for the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), towards achieving peaceful conduct of the forthcoming Local Government elections.

The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land, Oba (Dr.) Sikuru Adetona, made this pledge while receiving members of the Commission who were on a courtesy visit to his Palace in Ijebu-Ode, lauding OGSIEC for recognising the roles of the Traditional Institution in the election process.

Represented by the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Oladele, the Awujale noted that the visit coincided with the meeting of all the Ogun East Traditional Council, which he said was a sign of good omen, praying God to protect and bequeath members of the Commission wisdom to carry out the task.

“That your coming coincided with the meeting of all the Kabiyesis in the Ogun East Senatorial District is a huge blessing, I urge you to be firm, fair, transparent in the discharge of this very sensitive task. People from this place and the entire Ogun State are watching you, so, maintain your integrity”, the Monarch said.

Speaking earlier, OGSIEC Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed that the purpose of the visit was to seek for royal blessings and solicit support in the area of enlightening their subjects on the need to participate in the entire election process because the people respect and listen to them.

“Local Government is the closest to the people and as we prepare to elect Local Government Chairmen and Councilors, we thought it needful to respectfully ask you to use your influence to ask your subjects to come out and vote. Though we have been exploring the media for sensitization, we believe that your influence will help to further convince our people to come out and vote”, Osibodu stated.

He expressed appreciation to the Traditional Rulers for the warm reception, prayers offered the Commission and the entire Electoral officers for all the Local Government in Ogun East Senatorial District.

The Team thereafter visited the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Secretariate where they were received by the Transition Committee Vice Chairman, Alhaji Lagun Anibi and the Secretary to the Local Government, Dr. Oluwo Amos, who equally pledged their support for the Electoral Officers as well as the Commission.

The Commission is expected to replicate the visit to the Ogun West and Central Senatorial Districts by Wednesday 7th and Friday 9th July, 2021, respectively.
