The Acting Inspector General Of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has warned the newly promoted police officers in the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) department of Ogun state command not to use their new status as Non Commissioned Officers (NCOs) to victimise, oppress, revenge, harass or intimidate any members of the public.
Adamu admonished the newly promotes EOD officers to be fruitful to the Police Service Commission and use their new status to fight for the rights of the less previleged in the society.
The Police boss gave the warning yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital while decorating the three newly decorated EOD Police officers who were promoted from the rank of Inspector of Police to the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Acting Inspector General, Adamu, who spoke through the Commissioner of Police in Ogun Command, Bashir Makama charged the Bomb Squad officers to justify the confidence which the PSC has in them which made the commission to approve and direct the release of their promotions.
The three newly promoted ASP officers from the Bomb Squad in Ogun Command included: Godwin Etteng, Aina Oluwasegun with the only woman among them, Falilat Akande.
They were however, decorated by the Commander of the Bomb Squad in Ogun Command, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Taiwo Akingbehin.
Speaking with journalists after the decoration of the officers, Akingbehin, who stood in for the Ogun CP, Makama explained that promotion and decoration of the affected Bomb Squad personnel was in consonance with the vision and directives of the Inspector General of Police who has just acted with the directives of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Akingbehin explaines that promotion of officers in the service was never done haphazardly, but based on merit and steadfastness of officers to duties.
“This is in consonance with the directives of the IGP that their names were among the list released by the PSC, and he had sent messages across the various commands that we should decorate them and also relay his congratulatory message to them.
He said, “that is why I; as the Commander-In-Charge of the Bomb Squad in Ogun command, reacting to the Signal sent to me from the Police headquarters in Abuja, I am decorating them now”.
The Ogun Bomb Squad Commander emphasised that the days were gone, when officers would be due for promotion and would not be promoted “when he or she is not having any pending orderly-room trial”.
“The moment you’re due for promotion, the service will invite you to submit the Annual Evaluation Report and the moment you’re up to date, you get your promotion”.
While expressing the confidence that the promotion would bring out the best in the affected officers, Akingbehin also charged the younger officers as well as those who are still expecting their turn to remain dedicated to duty towards making the Police Service Commission proud.
