The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, be(FUNAAB), Professor Kolawole Salako has disclosed that the university environment would not tolerate cyber crimes, otherwise known as Yahoo Yahoo on the campus.
Professor Salako stated that the university community frowned at it, abhorred it in its totality and shall do everything possible to resist, because according to him, the university was for studies and carry out researches.
He gave this frown talk when the university had a Media Luncheon for what was described as “,in recognition and appreciation of the essential role of the Press to organisational and societal development”.
The VC said that he believed that any student admitted into the university was primarily expected to come in to study and concentrate on how to make good grades at the end of his or her years on the campus.
He lamented a situation where students are admitted into higher institutions and instead of focusing on their studies, they engaged themselves in all sorts of social vices including amongst others, cyber crimes otherwise known in the Nigeria context as Yahoo Yahoo.
Professor Salako who openly expressed his displeasure over the engagement of some students of other institutions in what they fondly call “internet business” said vehemently that Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta would not allow it.
The seasoned and cerebral teacher fingered some parents and guardians as being responsible for the involvement of their children and wards in cyber crimes because they support or encourage them. “I wonder how parents or guardians who cannot afford a car are comfortable seeing their children and wards who are still in school without any gainful employment ride state-of-the-art cars. If they had been frowning at such developments, many young people or students would not have seen it as a way of life.
On the luncheon, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kolawole Salako said it was in appreciation of the support of the Press to the success story of the University. He urged them to always be objective and display professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Professor Salako who is also a patron of NUJ assured the Journalists that the University shall not be in the news for any negative report, however, he charged them that should they get anything negative about the university, they should verify from the University before publishing.
According to hum, “I am not asking you not to publish but publish the truth and the truth only.
Earlier in his Welcome Address, the Chairman Ceremonials Committee, Professor Biodun Badmus commended the Journalists for the good job they have been doing in projecting the image of the University, urging them to also share their contributions on how to further move the University forward.
Corroborating the Chairman, the Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Dr. Linda Onwuka lauded the mix of journalists from the print and electronic media for being worthy partners in progress.
She stated that as partners in progress, the University would always have cause to call on them, charging them to always respond favourably whenever they were called upon.
