The die is cast. The battle line is drawn between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in today’s final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation in Accra Sport Stadium in the capital of Ghana.
The Nigerian team are battling the South Africa team in their quest to win the 9 trophy having already won the tournament 8 times while the South Africa are in dare need of the trophy having lost it in three previous finals without any in their kitty.
It will be recalled that the Nigeria Super Falcons have beaten Bayana Bayana of South Africa in a number of previous meets and have denied them the opportunity of winning the most sought-after women Championship. In 2000 edition Super Falcons right in front of their home crowd humiliated the South African 2-0 in Johannesburg.
However the South African women seemed ready for retaliation when at the Cape Coast Stadium, they defeated the Nigerians 1-0 in the group stage of this edition of the biennial tournament. Nigerian team regained confidence with a 4-0 thumping of Zambia on Wednesday.
To reach today finally South Africa beat Mali in the semi final while the Nigeria team defeated the current title holder, Cameroon on Penalty. Sports pundits believe today’s final would be an epic one with South Africa dying to win the tournament for the first, and on the grounds that the Falcons are out to retaliate the defeat they suffered during their first match.
The question who wins the tournament has become exigent as Nigeria’s goal monger and Africa Female best, Asisat Oshoala who missed several scoring chances seems to have found her scoring rhythm scoring three goals. Desire Oparanoze who has also scored two goals in the previous matches will also try to score more.
For the South Africans, they will bank on the revelation of the tournament Thembi Kgantiana who netted the goal against Nigeria and has scored more goals to become the highest goal scorer so far
